B.T.Young Scientist Exhibition 2010
On Friday the 15th of January the first year class travelled to Dublin to the B.T. Young Scientist Exhibition. The group left Ennistymon at 6 am in the company of their Science teacher Mrs Lyons and the German student teacher Herr Falko .The group arrived at 10 am and were met by Mr Murphy , the Physics teacher who accompanied the students from the school who had projects in the exhibition.
They went to visit the stands of the C.B.S. boys straight away .In the Chemical ,Physical and Mathematical Section there was Killian O' Dwyer with his project :An investigation into the minimum difference across vertices on various 3D solids Tiernan Doherty, David Carroll and Daniel McInerney were also in this section with their project :A comparison of frequency patterns of string on low and high quality guitars. These students were in the senior section and had put in a huge amount of work over the term to produce projects which were able to hold their own with the others in this section. Jack Hayes and Dean Fitzgerald were in the intermediate section of the above category with their project :Heads or tails ......can you choose? The fourth project from the C.B.S. was in the Intermediate section of the Biological and Ecological Category . This project :An investigation into the effect of the New Zealand Flatworm on earthworm populations in vegetable gardens .Daniel Beggan, Ryan Doyle and Richard Curran worked on this project.
The first years visited lots of stands that interested them, the exhibition hall where the colleges and many companies involved in science had exhibits, they saw the world of robots, the incredible 3D show etc. and picked up some free samples where they could. They had a great day out and though they were disappointed Funderland had already finished up this year before the young Scientist exhibition they still enjoyed the experience and many of them are hoping to be up there themselves next year with a project.
In all over 1500 projects entered and 500 were accepted so its a great achievement for the C.B.S that the four projects entered were of a standard that meant they were all accepted .All the boys and their teacher Mr Murphy stayed in the Mount Herbert Hotel for the duration of the exhibition ,the boys had a great time and made lots of friends .It is a great experience for students from the C.B.S. to be able to compete with the best in the country and the project work is a big help to students later when writing up reports for their Junior Sc . Investigations for their Science Exam, for the L.C.V.P. or Construction or Agricultural Sc. Exam in the Leaving Cert. It also looks impressive on their C.V. in years to come and is a talking point in interviews since it shows their ability to work independently .
When the results were announced on Friday evening the group from 3rd year ,Daniel ,Ryan and Richard were delighted to be given a Commendation for their project. Great credit is due to Mr Murphy who gave the boys good advice when they were writing up their proposals and gave up alot of his time to accompany them at the exhibition.
